What if since the pandemic, since 2020, since the emergence of remote work, we had completely sabotaged ourselves.

What if we had scuttled ourselves by locking ourselves in our remote work sarcophagus?

I look around me, either I’m blind, or I’m deaf, or both, but I don’t see a single new company that interests me, not a single new idea that excites me, nothing, it’s a bleak landscape, nothing, nothing new.

I tell myself: it’s you, you’re too old, you’re has been, or you’re a bear in your cave and you refuse to see. So I ask people around me: ouch, same story. Nah, nothing new, nothing exciting.

Now let me be clear, I loooove remote work. But today if I had to create a company again, launch an ecovillage, have an idea, never oh never with remote work (at the beginning at least, where the first years). I know that remote work doesn’t work for interaction. And at the beginning of these adventures you need a lot of interactions.

I’m starting to think that we’ve locked ourselves in our sarcophagus, nice and warm, well protected. And that we’re gradually discovering that outside nothing has grown, everything has burned up.

So everyone complains about catastrophic mindsets in companies: agile, design, everyone talks about it, everyone vomits it, but nobody really knows it. Anyway, large companies are also frozen. They froze during the pandemic, and seeing the wall of resource depletion and collapse approaching, they no longer move, they stockpile as much as possible while waiting to absorb the shock.

But this frozen, fossilized world, we no longer nourish it at all. On the contrary, we accentuate it, calm, comfortable, behind our screens, warm.

Hence also all these ruptures in our civilization. Nobody knows how to talk to anyone anymore.

We’ll need to come back out, as from an atomic shelter, to rebuild a desirable world. Or lock ourselves in until the last can of food (and please without complaining that nothing is going well).

Other clarifications:

  • Open source makes me wonder. Open source holds summits regularly to create this social connection, but that’s not what I’m talking about. How do ideas come? How does creation come? I wonder a) either open source copies without thinking (no) b) either at the beginning it’s a group in presence or c) something I missed and that I need to understand. Copying without thinking is not negative: “we’re going to make the lightest fastest web server”. We’re already in “productivity”. Not creation.
  • I’m talking about renewing the world around us. That’s what I’m starting to observe
  • I don’t know how to explain the desert I observe except by everyone’s confinement at home.
