Logbook from January 18, 2019, in Harrison Owen’s texts on open space he uses this maxim that I find very true:

Without passion, nobody is interested.
Without responsibility, nothing will get done.

Without passion, nobody is interested. Without responsibility, nothing will get done. One of the ways for me to experience this is to believe in something and take responsibility for moving it forward. At beNext, the “school of product ownership” conference is a way to achieve this.

The questions raised by this action that come to mind, right now:

  • How can I combine my pleasure and my interest? My pleasure in digging into a subject I love, my interest in making beNext visible for its product ownership expertise?
  • How do I keep content that pleases me, that respects our values, particularly the pursuit of excellence, that conveys the right messages, while letting go of it? Same questions for the editorial line and communication…
  • How do I involve benexters in the team when Dragoș and I are old tough guys who have been around the block many times, so that they feel comfortable getting involved, but also so they can adapt to our “demanding” ways as old veterans? At what point does letting go become dangerous, does it become so? At what point does mentoring become control? At what point do we no longer invite enough, but intimidate? At what point does negative (but constructive) feedback become frustration or fear for the other person?
  • How far should we sacrifice responsiveness for the group?
  • How do we hand over? That is, making the adventure continue without losing momentum while completely letting go while keeping a benevolent eye without regret or tension related to the path forward without oneself. (I understood that this requires reassuring the successors of one’s presence and support).

For the School of PO (Product Ownership) meetup, Dragoș and I are going to hand over to our budding coaches, our product owners, our scrummasters at beNext (or other benexters) who will inherit a beautiful vehicle to learn in turn. For the conference probably just as quickly, perhaps not yet for next year’s (2020). We’re discussing it. I need to convince my partner Dragoș.

Constant renewal seems essential to me. A real ability to have fun too. I probably need pride as well. Knowing how to let go is a fear and a joy simultaneously. From my observations, the more time passes, the more joy prevails over fear. Recognition nourishes me (like everyone). And I thank you for giving it to me.

On February 13 will take place the 2019 conference of the school of product ownership. I think I’m even more proud of its program than last year. I had a lot of pleasure in already meeting speakers or seeing benexters already joining the organizing team this year. I’m looking forward to handing over the meetup (and perhaps the conference next year). A joy also to move on to other topics (but to support the school if needed).

I would like to see you this Wednesday, February 13 and for you to come say a few words to me.

Below in the Harry Potter room, preparation for the session with Thaïs Vauquières, who does one woman shows full of energy and humor, and who will come talk to us about how she finds sketch ideas, how she handles difficult audiences, etc. Fascinating for me, and another choice to broaden horizons.
