Hello, today I’m switching all my old content and especially all new content (and this entire blog) from a https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/ license to a https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/4.0/ license.
This means that before you could:
Before
https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/
- Share - copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format, for any purpose, even commercially.
- Adapt - remix, transform, and build upon the material for any purpose, even commercially.
But you had to:
- Attribute: You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use.
- ShareAlike: If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you must distribute your contributions under the same license as the original.
Starting today
https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/4.0/
You can still:
- Share - copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format, for any purpose, even commercially.
But you can no longer: Adapt - remix, transform, and build upon the material for any purpose, even commercially.
You must still:
- Attribute: You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use.
But you can no longer: if you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you may not distribute the modified material.
Why?
I have no illusions: no one ever asks me to share and adapt my content. But I want to anticipate the misdeeds of commercial corporations that abuse internet content and I think it’s time to protect ourselves more as individuals. I’m naturally thinking of the misdeeds of Artificial Intelligence engines, but also of others. I have no illusions, these people rarely respect the law, but sometimes the law catches up with them.
I in no way wish to limit access to my content for people. It’s there, it’s available, and I receive thanks from time to time that tell me it’s useful to others besides myself. For me it’s useful, because writing brings many benefits. I thank the people who thank me, it helps me, and it’s always pleasant.
Perhaps moreover this creative commons license is not yet the right one, if you have recommendations I’m all ears.
