[ The new and latest version of the game is called “The Practice Sawmill” and can be found here]

A fascinating discussion around a table at Agile Open Sud 2013 with Stéphane, Anthony & JeanPascal. We are “raising the stakes” regarding our agile practices: “which is more important between this one and that one, there can be only one left”. I realize on one hand that it’s a very interesting discussion, and especially on the other hand that talking about practices this way leads us to culture. Hence the idea of making it into a workshop/game.

Beyond this discussion I haven’t practiced this game, so this is the beta version that I’m going to evolve, with your help if you’re willing. And perhaps first confirm the interest or not of this format. I’m printing the cards on Monday, I’ll try to play as early as Tuesday.

Workshop Rules

Note: groups of 3 to 6 people

Duration: 30min to 1h

Materials: 1 set of “practice” cards per participant

  • A set of all the “practice” cards is given to each participant
  • Each participant selects the 12 most important practices in their view.
  • Each participant shows their 12 practices to the other participants. We only keep the practices that are common to all participants.
  • We launch discussion “rounds” of 1 to 10min. At the end of each “round” we eliminate the practice that despite everything seems least important to the group. (we can introduce a majority vote, unanimous vote, with Jim McCarthy’s “decider”, a simple but effective conversation, etc.)
  • With 3 practices you have your Agile DNA.
  • We do as many “rounds” as necessary until only one remains (yes I know it’s hard, but for the good of the workshop it must be done).
